When I’m writing a screenplay, I’m very particular. I have a room in my library that I call the Rain Room, where it’s dark and raining 24 hours a day. There’s an artificial window with rain and a surround system that plays rain. I put a little movie music on, and I’m writing in the dark with rain.
Writing is like going to a new country. You go to a new country with a vague idea of where you want to go and when you’re coming back. [If you go saying,] ‘I´m going to Rome, I´ll see the Coliseum, and I’ll be back next Saturday.’ That’s good, that’s loose. But if you go with an itinerary that says, ‘10:00-10:15-Observe the Coliseum. 10:15-11:00-Walk the Coliseum.’ You become a tourist rather than a traveler. I think a traveler gets lost in the city and allows that to be a part of his journey. I think it’s great to get lost in your screeplay now and then.
